Gillespie Bass Club

Matt Stieren takes 1st at Kentucky Lake Two-Day!

April 26th, 2010

On April 24 and 25, the Gillespie Bass Club held their 4th tournament of the season on Kentucky Lake. A majority of the anglers have never been on the lake. This left for an overwhelming, yet exciting experience dealing with such a large body of water. Taking out of Jonathan Creek, their was plenty of fishy water right where we started, but this didn’t stop the anglers from venturing out to tackle this well known fishery. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate as well as the club would have liked. Both days were filled with high winds and rain, causing some pretty rough water. 28 anglers participated with 24 weighing in 44 fish with a total weight of 120.26 lbs. The winners are as follows:

1st, Matt Stieren, 5 fish, 14.47 lbs.
2nd, Mike Slightom, 5 fish, 14.38 lbs.
3rd, Dave Blevins, 4 fish, 13.05 lbs.
Big Bass, Dave Blevins, 6.62 lbs.

Roger Large wins tough Newton tournament!

April 12th, 2010

On April 11, 2010, the Gillespie Bass Club took part in their 3rd tournament of the season on Newton Lake. Newton lake is a well known fishery on the other side of Effingham known for it’s nice keeper size bass. Plus size bass are often common in this lake due to the 18 inch length limit that is enforced. Water temps ranging from low to mid 60’s were found in the cold arm while the warm arm was 70’s to low 80’s. Fishing pressure over the weekend from other organizations made for a tough bite. Every angler had to work for that keeper fish! After it was all said and done, 33 anglers participated with 16 weighing in 21 fish for a total weight of 88.46 lbs. The winners are as follows:

1st, Roger Large, 3 fish, 10.50 lbs.
2nd, Bill Augustine, 2 fish, 8.62 lbs.
3rd, Dave Blevins, 2 fish, 7.90 lbs.
Big Bass, Gus Viewheg, 5.39 lbs.

Newton Tourney

April 8th, 2010

Just some information on Newton. Alot of the newer members have never been to this lake and its a pretty good drive. I think from Gillespie to the lake is around 106 miles. Keep this is mind when deciding on a time to leave in the morning. If your wondering about a place to eat, most of the members stop in Effingham at the Iron Skillet. It’s the first Effingham exit. If you don’t feel like driving down the morning of, some of us are going down a day early and staying at the Super 8 in Effingham. This is the second Effingham exit. If you plan on doing that, I would call in advance to book a room. Some other useful info. This lake has enforced an 18 inch limit. Some of you and myself are saying “Have I ever caught an 18 inch fish?” Well they are in there and they are big and mean. Nothing like throwing back a 4 pounder cause it was short! See everyone at the lake.
